- Organize a fundraiser
Choose a humane society, animal shelter or rescue group to which to donate the proceeds of a bake sale, car wash, book sale or carnival. Contact the organization and ask them for general information to distribute to students and the public.
- Form a club
Organize an animal club that meets weekly. Discuss animal-related topics, go on field trips and develop community service projects.
- Organize an animal awareness week
A school or community- wide animal awareness week will help get the message of kindness to animals heard.
- Get the community involved
Ask local businesses and the media to spread the word about caring about animals. Organize a dog walk or wash in your community and ask for donations or sponsorship.
- Sponsor a speaker
Invite an animal expert to speak at your school. Host the event in the evening, sell tickets and donate the proceeds to a local humane organization.
- Give out information
Man a table at school or in front of the local supermarket. Ask the community to sign a pact to be responsible pet owners. Display all the signatures at the local community center.
- Educate
Give out correct information about animals to help people become more informed and responsible.
- Be creative
Perform a play, design a poster, create an animal bulletin board, make a quilt, write a newsletter or write a song about animals.
- Keep up to date
Read lots of books about animals. It will keep you knowledgeable and accurate.
- Be responsible pet owners
Show others how to be a responsible pet owner by example--be one yourself.
- Write letters
Write letters to lawmakers and the media expressing your concerns about animals and the environment.
- Organize a drive
Organize a toy, towel or animal food drive in your community. Put a marked container in a high traffic area for people to see. Give the collected items to an animal organization.

For puppies in shelter and mobile adoptions
- Bake
Make Doggie Cookies or cat treats
- Make catnip toys
Material with a cotton ball and cat nip inside, tied up with a ribbon

Make Hamster houses, Guinea Pig Garages, or Rat Retreats (made with craft sticks, non-toxic glue. tunnels of toilet paper rolls and lots of creativity)
- Make gift bags
Fill with treats, toys, grooming supplies, coupons, etc. for new adopters (cats or dogs)
- Sponsor a dog or cat
Make a resume, take a picture, make copies and hand out flyers to get pet adopted
- Rabbit care gift bags
A slinky toy for the bunnies, small box of raisins, rabbit care & behavior information
- Make cat beds
1/2 pillowcase and stuff with old T-shirts or towels

With feathers or puff balls tied to ribbons to dangle on cages

Pet Food, treat, supply coupons from the newspapers to give out to new adopters

For the animals! People have asked their friends to bring gifts and or money for the animals instead of themselves.
- Explore
Humane issues, such as puppy mills, circuses, animal experimentation and/or factory farming. Give a presentation or invite a speaker to talk about these issues with your group/class.

Like a car wash, but for neighborhood dogs, can also educate public about responsible pet care and grooming.

Ask local businesses, restaurants, etc. to donate prizes.
- Make ornaments
To sell at shelter or for a rescue group during the holidays
- Ask a movie theater
to donate a portion of ticket sales or snack sales to the organization of choice.
- Ask two high schools
to participate and set up a competition between rival high schools to see who can raise the most money.
- Ask your local hair salon
to host a cut-a-thon
- Ask a local photographer
to shoot pet portraits
- Hold a theme party
Valentine’s Day, Singles’ Night
- Ask local band
to play a benefit concert
- Hold a fund raising event
Several people from across the country have set up booths at fairs or craft shows to benefit the local shelters! They have held auctions and sold gift items. If you want to hold an event, let us know and we will send you newsletters and information.
- Do you have a display spot for newsletters
Maybe your office or your vet has a spot where you could set up some newsletters for people to pick up? Let us know and we will send you a small plastic stand and a stack of newsletters.
